Fixing Potholes

Dear Editor of Better Roads Magazine,

Your sure hit the road with a winner when you said in your April editorial that semi-permanent repairs were better than temporary repairs as they are more cost effective. And when you went on to identify that permanent repairs made with today's superior products were the ultimate choice, it was the icing on the concrete, so to speak. In the benefits of fixing potholes right the first time, choosing permanent repairs are most significant. Certainly these repairs are more cost effective in the long run, even if the materials are more expensive as you indicated.

Let's consider some additional factors. Fixing potholes as soon as they are visible stops further degradation of the road. Fixing them fast and permanently means that traffic jams are reduced and perhaps road rage will drop.

There is also a fuel saving factor here. Fast, permanent highway repairs are precisely what the traffic patron wants. And timely, permanent repairs also have the greatest impact on reducing collateral costs that almost everyone seems to ignore. The damage to vehicle, tires, wheels; shocks, alignments and so on are a significant personal financial burden. Reducing these costs could put hundreds of dollars annually into the pockets of everyone who owns an automobile. And the same is true for commercial vehicles and the business that own them.

All highway maintenance organizations should make an effort to learn about and use the advanced materials technology that allows them to make permanent repairs year round.
